Chapter

Sixteen

Sleep was for the weak and Kierra wasn’t weak.

After the assault she’d endured, in the early morning hours Kierra’s body had eventually calmed and exhaustion set in. Fighting for her life was worth every ounce of energy, but it was also draining. Her head drooped threateningly but, thankfully, she had the demons outside to keep her awake.

Periodic sounds of some unknown fiends skulking through the grass filtered through the bars and more than one horrific face made an appearance there as well. None of them, not even the smallest, could crawl between the bars though. Diedra’s enchantments held perfectly.

Kierra stared unflinchingly into a scarred, tortured face. The demon snarled at her, baring its pathetic mouth. Half its jaw was missing on the left side and burns marked its dark green face carved with various marks of enslavement. It’s red eyes were vengeful, but this creature didn’t know vengeance. Not truly.

So she stared at it emotionlessly and eventually, it gave up. Blood matted parts of her hair nearest her scalp, and her hair was hopelessly tangled from her struggle. She counted the grooves in the wall opposite her, endlessly replaying her capture. Mouthing soundless threats at the memory of her mother.

Eventually, her back grew stiff and tight from sitting and she finally climbed to her feet to stretch. She peered out the window. Diedra was nowhere in sight. She scanned the grove. Every few seconds, the flowers adjusted their position, skittishly resisting the blowing wind. Kierra frowned.

Clouds floated by and, as the afternoon progressed, the air cooled until her breath steamed in the air. She shivered, but there was no blanket to wrap around her body in the barren prison. Fury glided through her entire body. The thought of being trapped again for any length of time was torturous. She pressed her forehead against the wall and sighed.

Miserably, she sank to her knees and resorted to one of the few things that would keep her sane. Sharpening her magic into an invisible blade, she cut the index finger on her right hand and began to draw on the wall.

The afternoon dawdled and brought the scent of wildflowers and daisies mixed with lavender and roses. A single bird chirped from atop the highest tree. She squinted at her drawing, trying to decide where to paint the bird into her mural, imagining what kind of bird it had to be from the sound it made. Ultimately, she painted it as a tiny dot against the horizon. It squawked as it flapped several feet up then away from the grove.

A sort of wonder took over as Kierra looked at her bloody painting. The blood failed to capture the graying sky and dulling leaves as the sunlight retreated behind thick clouds. Kierra paused. Something pricked the back of her neck. She stood and peered out the window.

One of the trees shook, leaves floating towards the earth. Strands of black hair hung forward as she leaned closer to the window. Her slender fingers gripped the stone ledge.
